Joe McCauley Gallery presents Iranian Artists' Reflection
January 18, 2022An installation of work on display at Heartland Community College gives voice to Iranian women through photography, digital art, and video.
The Joe McCauley Gallery at Heartland presents Being a Woman - Iranian Artists’ Reflection, from January 10 to March 4, 2022.
Violence against women is one of the most devastating and widespread human rights violation persisting in our world today. This collection explores this topic through an array of work by 50 Iranian women artists living and creating in Iran, where domestic violence is not considered a crime and women’s rights are severely restricted. While they are forbidden to speak up about the injustices they face in their home country, this exhibition gives them a platform to exercise their voice, share their perspective, and spark important conversations.
The collection was curated by Shahrbanoo Hamzeh, Joe McCauley Gallery Coordinator.
“This show is about being a woman in my country - the homeland that I love and I had to leave,” said Hamzeh “In this show, Iranian women artists get to share their experience of being a woman in our home-county. The images reveal their fear, loneliness, confusion, pain, and suffering as well as their resilience and ongoing fight to change the situation.”
Because of the difficulty of sending work from Iran, all pieces were sent digitally and reproduced locally. The exhibit features work in the mediums of photography, video, and digital paintings.
A reception will take place on Monday, February 7 at 4:00 p.m. at the Gallery.
