Library Resources For You

Collection

Borrow books, DVDs, and more from the HCC Library. You also have access with I-Share to borrow items from other participating academic libraries in Illinois, if the HCC Library does not have the item you are seeking. Make an I-Share account to request books from other academic libraries in Illinois. Materials are placed outside the library doors for pickup when they arrive. Looking for something new to read? Check out our New Books page or talk to a librarian for material suggestions.

Research Support

Heartland librarians can support your academic research by: conducting specialized research and creating an annoted bibliography, answering citation questions, explaining copyright policies, setting up RSS feeds from academic journals, interlibrary loaning full-text articles, and more!

Library Resources For Your Classroom & Students

Collection Development

Does the library need a specific resource to assist your students in their assignments? The library welcomes any suggestions and requests for purchase of materials that support Heartland's curriculum, benefits employee professional development, or proves useful to students. For resources on Open Education Resources, try the library's OER Research Guide or contact Rachelle Stivers for more information.

Reserves

Place course materials on phsycial or electronic reserve. Reserves can be checked out for in-library use, 24-hours, or 1-week. Contact Erin Zimmerman with questions or to place items on reserve.

Instruction Services

Information literacy skills taught in instruction sessions address the critical thinking competencies in HCC's Essential Competencies (PDF). Working with a librarian reduces research anxiety and improves the quality of student research and papers. Students learn more in instruction sessions when the class is taught at "point of need." Plan a library visit after your students have reviewed their assignment and chosen topics. The librarians also have support options for online classes.

Make an Instruction Request

At the end of instruction sessions, students will:
  • Refine a research topic
  • Understand the difference between scholarly and popular sources
  • Identify relevant search terms
  • Conduct efficient searches in online databases and the I-Share catalog
  • Evaluate the credibility of sources
  • Create citations using NoodleTools
  • Understand how to avoid plagiarism
