Test out of Courses with a Proficiency Exam

Proficiency exams are available for those who would like to attempt to earn credit by examination. 

Exam Appointments: A course proficiency exam should be completed at least 2 weeks before the beginning of a term as to allow time for credit processing. If you are interested in taking a Proficiency Exam, please contact your Academic Advisor to discuss your options.

To request a Proficiency Exam, please reach out to Testing via email [testing@heartland.edu] with the following information:

  1. Full Name
  2. HCC ID Number
  3. Proficiency Exam you are interested in taking [see list below]
  4. Contact Information [HCC email address & Phone Number]

The Testing Center will contact you within 3 business days with your next steps!

Cost

Start by requesting your exam. When you are prepared to take your selected Proficiency Exam, you will need to pay the non-refundable fee of $34 per credit hour to HCC Business Office. After payment is received, the Testing Center will reach out to assist you in scheduling your exam.

Presentation Graphics – MS PowerPoint

1 credit hour

  • Computer: Canvas
  • MOS PowerPoint Proficiency Exam-MO300. Passing this exam will give credit for CTEC 125
  • Attempts: 1 Total
50 minutes 70%

CTEC 136/137

Excel Level I and II

2 credit hours

  • MOS Proficiency Excel Exam-MO200. Passing this exam will give credit for CTEC 136 & CTEC 137
  • Attempts: 1 Total
50 minutes 70%

CTEC 146/147

Access Level I and II

2 credit hours

  • MOS Access Proficiency Exam-MO500. Passing this exam will give credit for CTEC 146 & CTEC 147
  • Attempts: 1 Total
50 minutes 70% for each section

CTEC 156/157

Word Level I and II

2 credit hours

  • MOS Word Proficiency Exam-MO100. Passing this exam will give credit for CTEC 156 and CTEC 157
  • Attempts: 1 Total
50 minutes 70% for each section

OTEC 101

Keyboarding

1 credit hour

  • Computer: Canvas
  • Three sections
  • Multiple choice concept
  • Timed writing
  • Technique evaluation
  • Attempts: 1 Total
2 hours 80% for each section

TMAT 103

Technical Math I

4 credit hours

  • Computer: Canvas
  • Calculator allowed
  • Attempts: 1 Total
2 hours
